If a fatal, life-threatening, asteroid or comet were to strike Earth ...?

do you think we would ever be able to save ourselves? I have heard that if a nuclear weapon were to shoot up into space directed upon the asteroid it would be able to blow it up and shoot the debris into farther and different directions away from Earth. But I wonder if that's accurate ... or if it's just an old wives' tale?
